Best Way to Clean Your Indoor Blinds

When you get your blinds installed, one of the first questions our clients ask our installers is: “What is the best way to clean your indoor blinds without removing them?”

It is actually not that difficult to clean your blinds. It is just a matter of understanding how the different materials react to water or soap or a vacuum cleaner.

Despite it is a time-consuming task, it is much easier than many people think. What is the secret to clean your blinds? Just use the right tools and the right technique, and you will see how easy it is. There is no need to call a cleaner to do that. But we are also not gonna stop you if you want to do so.

Type of blinds

Venetian Blinds come in horizontal slats that could be of different materials (wood, aluminium, PVC) and length.

Put the dry or damp rag in between the slats and clean the top and the bottom of the surface. Start from the top of the blinds, going down to the bottom. In fact, while cleaning the Venetian Blinds, dust from the top will drop down to the bottom.

Vertical Blinds come in vertical fabric slats of a length that varies depending on the windows’ dimension.

The best way to clean these type of indoor blinds is to use the vacuum cleaner and its small accessory (dust brush of 10-15 cm wide). Wipe from the top the bottom, both side of the vertical blinds.

Roller Blinds come in a single piece of fabric of different materials.

We recommend wiping the blinds with your vacuum cleaner and its small accessories (dust brush). A vacuum cleaner removes all the dust. If there is any dirt, a dry or humid (water and gentle soap) cloth should remove most of the stains. Do not rub, just dab on the spot!

Type of materials

Metal blinds (aluminium) can be cleaned with a dry or slightly humid (cold water and gentle soap) rag to wipe off any dust or dirt.

Due to their Anti-static treatment, they usually repel dust themself but at least once a year it is recommended to clean them.

Wooded blinds need extra care when it is time for cleaning.

Never use water as it could damage or discolour the surface. Simply use a soft cloth or a dry feather duster to gently wipe off any dust or dirt.

Plastic blinds (PVC or vinyl) are easy to maintain and less delicate that wooden or fabric blinds. A dry or damp cloth (water and soap) will do the job.

Fabric Blinds like roller blinds, roman blinds and vertical blinds usually collect dust. Your vacuum cleaner and its small accessory (dust brush) will remove all the dust.

Any dirt can be removed with a damp cloth and dab on the spot (do not rub!).

Last but not least, when cleaning your blinds do not forget to clean the pull strings. Strings usually get discoloured by dust, dirt and sun damage. Use a white cloth and put it in warm water with fabric-safe cleaning soap. Grip the strings and move down to remove any dirt or dust.
